Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is this neck rash I have, is it shingles?
About 5 days ago, I started to get this neck rash. It is only a little itchy and that is because I wear tight collars for work.

I looked up and read about shingles. But I have had no pain where the rash is or elsewhere on my body. Also, the rash has not blistered or contains liquid in any way.

I have not felt ill at all. I had a mild headache a couple days ago and took some tablets as normal, that's it.

So, I don't think its shingles but it looks just like the pictures here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shingles#Epidemiology
edit: I've just looked here at Google Images (http://tinyurl.com/2y6zvg) and it looks nowhere near as severe or bad!

By the way, I took some digital pictures of my rash here. What do you think? No pain, no fever, no blistering. But why should I get this strange rash on my neck???

    • ANSWER:
Shingles is a viral infection of the skin. The virus, Varicella zoster is actually the same virus that causes chicken pox. This virus can lay dormant in the nerves for decades. If you had chicken pox as a child, the virus can reactivate as an adult, causing shingles. Singles are typically more common in the elderly, probably due to their weakened immune systems caused by other health problems. Shingles usually only affects one side of the body, and mostly on the back and/or trunk area. It is painful to the point that even a light breeze can be difficult for the person to bear. The symptoms you've mentioned, and the pictures of your rash, lead me to believe you do not have shingles. The rash does resemble seborrhoeic dermatitis, but it's difficult to determine without a culture. You should see your physician just to be safe. Good luck to you :-)

  2. QUESTION:
My 9 month old has a rash... What websites have good info and pictures?
Just over a week ago my daughter got a few spots on her cheek, which I thought was acne. She wasn't itching them or anything. We're starting to feed her solid foods and I gave her about two bites of egg yolk the day before yesterday, but she wasn't hungry anyways, now that I think on it. So yesterday she woke up with a bit of a rash on her cheeks and one arm. We didn't give her any foods she hasn't had before, haven't changed her soap, or my cleaning products. Now the rash has spread all over her face, the back of her neck and down her arms. There are little white tipped bumps and bigger red ones mixed in. Her rectal temp was 99.9, so she doesn't have a fever. Her eyes are glazed and shadowed, so I know she's not feeling well. She's been coughing a little and rubbing her eyes a lot the past few weeks, we thought it was basic allergies. Can allergies cause a rash like that? What websites have you found that have good resources and pictures so I can see her symptoms? Thanks!

oh and anything above 98.6 degrees is a fever for adults & children, so u might wanna give her some tylenol or take her to the doc. if this continues.

  3. QUESTION:
i have some type of rash on my neck and shoulders and i don't know what its from.?
the rash starts from my neck and goes down to my shoulders. they look like little circular dots that vary in different sizes. both of my shoulders are covered with them and there are a few on my chest. my neck is kinda red and then it fades down into the circular dots. when i rub my fingers across them i don't feel anything. they don't itch real bad or anything. to my knowledge i haven't been doing anything different (soap, cloths, lotions, etc..). they are not anywhere else on my body, just around my shoulders. i thought maybe it was a heat rash but from some pictures that i have seen, they don't look the same. so i don't know what i should do here.
i have had it for a while. atleast 3 or 4 months now. it doesn't look like its gotten worse but it doesn't look like it's going away either. it looks similar to some pictures that i have seen of ringworms, but can you get them on your shoulders? they are small. they aren't big at all there is just a bunch of them grouped in one area across my shoulders.

    • ANSWER:
It could be a fungus caused from sweat. Consult with your doctor.

Let me know if for some reason the pics arent working..

    • ANSWER:
      Maureena,
The oil that causes the skin rash is the same for both plants. It's called Urushiol.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urushiol

So there's no way to know which it is, but it doesn't matter because the end result is exactly the same.

All I can say is - if he's not miserable, it's not poison ivy or poison oak. The spot is really small but still.... even small spots of poison ivy are miserable. Also - if he made any contact with it, it would have probably made a rash that was more widespread than what shows in your pics. Poison ivy/oak itch is unlike any other itch I've had in my life. It feels like it's below the skin and inside of it and there's not much that helps. If you just scratch it as long as it feels good, it never stops itching, and you'll go through your skin until it's a bloody mess.

Poison ivy and poison oak creates a random looking splotchy rash with little bumps and big bumps. I've spent literally hundreds, if not thousands of hours in the outdoors, camping, fishing, and walking around in the woods. I can also tell you this, there's about a billion different things that will cause a minor rash, especially if he's allergic. I hit a point where if I lay down in grass and it touches my skin for awhile, I get hives. That's just grass but it's not uncommon. Another possibility you didn't mention would be that it was caused by a bug of some kind. Ticks and chiggers and fire ants aren't the only creature that can cause blisters, welts, and itchy or red spots.

I'd put some aloe vera benadryl gel on it and forget it if it was my own skin, but your son being your son, and you being a mama, I understand why you'd want to get it looked at.

  5. QUESTION:
please help. woke up with swollen face and rash. (pictures)?

So heres the story. For my AP environmental class we went into the woods on tuesday to get tree samples. On thursday i woke up with a little dot on my ankle that looked like a mosquito bite and was itchy. The next morning i woke up with a mark on my neck that was bumpy and felt like two hives next to each other? I dont know how else to describe it. Saturday morning i woke up and the thing on my ankle had gotten slightly bigger and now there was some marks on my face. This morning i wake up and THIS IS WHAT I LOOK LIKE. Ive had poision ivy before and its never looked anything like this. Im thinking it could be another poisionus plant in the woods. As far as i know im not allergic to any foods. PLEASE HELP ME. The doctors office isnt open yet

    • ANSWER:
Without being able to see you my first guess is poison oak or sumac. Both are more extreme than poison ivy. Go to the drugstore and get a product called technu. (sp.?) It won't cure it but it will at least kill the oils on the skin and prevent it from spreading further.
